Senate authorizes arming Syrian rebels - what could go wrong?

Because of President Obama's aversion to committing US ground troops to fight wars, the Senate has voted within the last hour to arm Syrian rebels fighting against the Assad regime. Many of the rebels are Islamist.
President Obama’s proposal to arm Syrian rebels passed, along with a continuing resolution to fund the government, with the support of 78 senators.
“I want to thank leaders in Congress for the speed and seriousness with which they approached this issue,” Obama said after the vote, which he noted received a majority of Republican and Democratic votes.
Senator Ted Cruz (R., Texas) was one of the 22 senators who voted against the measure. “I cannot vote to empower our lawless president to continue his plans that threaten the economy and our national security,” said Sen. Cruz. “The Continuing Resolution funds Obama’s Amnesty, it funds Obamacare, and it funds military operations in Syria that are not authorized by Congress and are dependent on unreliable actors in the region.”
ISIS is fighting Assad. The al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra front is fighting Assad. And now they will have US arms to better fight Assad and establish their Caliphate.

What could go wrong?
